Numerous media outlets have reported on the mysterious demise of four racing sailors in the 2012 Newport/Ensenada Race. Wreckage of the Hunter 376 Aegean was found offshore near the Mexican border on Sunday, April 29. Three bodies were recovered by the U.S. Coast Guard, a fourth is still missing. The position of the race boats on the 124-mile race is tracked by the race committee. Aegean's tracking device went offline at 0130 on Sunday morning. The cause of the accident is still unknown, but a collision with a commercial vessel is suspected as the most likely cause of the fatal accident, reportedly the first in the 65-year history of the race.
The U.S. Coast Guard has now suspended its search for the missing crewmember of the sailing vessel Aegean at 1615, April 29. The Coast Guard, Mexican Navy and civilian volunteers searched more than 600 square-miles since yesterday afternoon.
