Boothbay Boatbuilders & Seafood Festival

Apr 14, 2008
The sixth annual Boothbay Boatbuilders & Seafood Festival is scheduled for Sunday August 3, 2008, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will be held at the Ocean Point Marina and Route 96 in East Boothbay.

The festival will feature the Ocean Classroom Foundation’s Spirit of Massachusetts, a 125-foot fishing schooner modeled after the 1889 Gloucester schooner, Fredonia. The sail-training schooner was built at the Charleston Navy Yard in Boston in 1984 and purchased by the Ocean Classroom Foundation in 2000. Spirit of Massachusetts rounds out the foundation’s fleet, joining the venerable schooners Westward and Harvey Gamage. Alix Thorne, president of the Ocean Classroom board, said that guests at the festival would be invited to board the schooner, where students and staff will be available to answer questions.

Visitors will also be able to visit East Boothbay’s shipyards, the Ocean Point Marina, and Nat Wilson’s Sail Loft. Small craft builders will be on hand to display their boats and share their knowledge.  There will be lectures, live music, marine exhibits, demonstrations and an art show featuring the work of East Boothbay artist Earle Barlow. Fresh seafood will abound.
