The race committee of the Marion to Bermuda race continues to tweak the race rules to keep a balance between those sailors who wish to use celestial navigation and those who would rather use electronic navigation. A change in the last race offered a “celestial bonus” to those boats that were navigated by celestial only. The next race, which will begin in Marion, Mass., on June 18, 1999, will see separate celestial and electronic classes.
Separating the categories allows navigators, both electronic and celestial, to fully participate. “Our goal is to have more boats in the race,” said Faith Paulsen, race administrator. “We feel that electronics are the wave of the future, and we don’t want to exclude anyone from this race.”
