Tsunami Warning in Pacific

NOAA has issued a Tsunami warning for the Pacific area. See Update below. A devastating earthquake in Japan has caused widespread damage and triggered a tsunami that has already come ashore in Japan. The tsunami should be hitting Hawaii this morning, and will be impacting the West Coast of North America later today. For more information go to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

UPDATE (15:30 EST): Parts of the Northern California coastline, including Crescent City Harbor and Santa Cruz, have been damaged by the tsunami. The Los Angeles Times reports that boats and docks have been crushed, and several people have been swept out to sea.

UPDATE (03/12/2011, 10:30 EST): Harbors near the border between Oregon and California sustained heavy damage from tsunami waves according to this Associated Press story.
