Four Across the Atlantic

In 2004, 18 captains and crew set out on a unique rally event: the first ever Nordhavn powerboat rally across the Atlantic. Captain Doug Seaver writes of his own personal adventure and experience of the rally aboard the 50-foot Nordhavn Four Across. Organized by the manufacturers of Nordhavn trawlers, the event began in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and finished in Gibraltar. In diary format, Seaver recounts the trip and says of the book, “This is the tale of a modern adventure for anyone who ever dreamed of going to sea.” Seaver’s tales include near disasters, hardship, ramming, replacing of crew and memories of world-famous cruising ports. The unique camaraderie of a rally event can also be experienced through the story.

This is truly the tale of one man’s personal adventure. Even emails related to the trip have a place in this overview. Beginning with the chapter, “Finding the Perfect Boat,” Seaver lays out the sea trials and qualifying trips necessary for the trip, then preparations and the crossing from Bermuda to the classic sailing port of Horta in the Azores and finally to Gibraltar. Although Seaver shares all of the human challenges such an event engenders, the details involved in planning and preparation are all practical for anyone considering joining a Nordhavn rally or considering a powerboat crossing. In Four Across the Atlantic you can join with Captain Seaver and his crew on their adventure of a lifetime.
