Following ocean racing by computer

Fans of round-the-world racing are benefiting from innovative technology that allows people to watch progress of an adventure not usually thought to be a spectator sport. One of the best web sites for feeling part of the action is VirtualSpectator.com, which allows visitors to follow, in 3-D, progress of the Vendée Globe yachts as they race west to east around the globe non-stop and the multihulls competing in The Race.

At press time in late January the Vendée yachts were pictured racing north on the homestretch of the South Atlantic toward the Equator. The Race yachts were headed in the other direction-making between 20 and 30 knots on a course for the Cape of Good Hope.
