AC Delco and Hong Kong-based Daka Development Ltd. have designed a new flashlight based on Faraday's law of induction.
Simply shaking the flashlight passes a magnet through a wire coil generating electrical energy. A capacitor then stores the energy and delivers it to a bright LED. The new flashlight, called the Faraday Star, will illuminate a 5-foot-diameter area at 50 feet and is visible for up to one mile. It operates for five minutes after 30 seconds of shaking — all without batteries.
The new flashlight is extremely durable and is built with a watertight housing. If dropped overboard, the light will also float.
