Fifteen Sea Scouts were rescued earlier this month after their catamaran sailboat capsized in waters off San Francisco.

The U.S. Coast Guard and San Francisco Police marine patrol units responded to the vessel near Aquatic Beach Park at about 1530 on Sept. 3, according to a Coast Guard news release. One adult and the 15 Sea were found hanging onto the size of the vessel when rescue crews arrived. All were wearing life jackets.

"This rescue illustrates the vital importance of safety equipment for all seasoned and recreational boaters," said Lt. j.g. Nicole Emmons, Public Affairs Officer for Coast Guard Sector San Francisco, said in a statement."The Coast Guard recommends the use of a registered EPIRB, PPIRB, fully functioning marine band radio and proper use of life jackets."

Paramedics assessed the boaters after they returned to land. No injuries were reported.

The fate of the sailboat was not immediately known.

Let's hope the experience didn't sour the youngsters on sailing and going to sea.
