On June 29, McMurdo, a leading company in emergency readiness and response, launched a web-based MEOSAR knowledge center. The website will allow those that use search and rescue technology to learn more about the deployment and improved function of the Medium Earth Orbit Search and Rescue (MEOSAR) system. MEOSAR is the next generation of the Cospas-Sarsat international search and rescue satellite system, which has been in place since 1982. Among other developments, MEOSAR will be able to detect and locate a distress beacon “almost instantaneously” rather than the 45 minutes or more it can take today. McMurdo has recently established the first MEOSAR systems (satellite ground stations and mission control and rescue coordination centers) in the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand. McMurdo hopes that its new online knowledge center will allow increased access to information about the system and its benefits.
