Harken Introduces the FlatWinder™ Powered Block for Mainsheet Traveler  Control

The Harken FlatWinder™ powered block is a low-profile, self-contained electrically-powered system for mainsheet traveler adjustment on monohulls and catamarans. This captive line arrangement offers sailors the means to control a loaded main quickly and accurately, significantly reducing the need to use the mainsheet winch to trim the sail. Plus, the motorized block is easier and less expensive than powered traveler winches, and keeps line off the cockpit floor.

“We designed the FlatWinder to make sailing easier,” says Davide Burrini, International OEM Sales and Sales Manager, Harken Italy. “Now, instead of relying on winches, sailors can adjust the mainsail by pushing a button, quickly activating the traveler for maneuvering, trimming, or reducing heel. It’s the perfect product for sailors who want to sail solo, don’t have enough crew, or have limited mobility. It’s also the answer for families who want a more relaxing cruising experience through less physical handling of the sails.”

The progressive grip of the block’s drive sheave contains the line, exerting just the right amount of friction to reduce wear on the line and components. A compact horizontal motor is housed neatly belowdeck and has a maximum working load of 250 kg (551 lb). When used with small-diameter 10 mm line and a 4:1 purchase, this translates into around 1000 kg (2205 lb) of pull. Line speed with no load is 35 m/min.

Harken recommends installing two (2) space-saving, dual-function Digital System Switches*, one mounted port, the other starboard for ease and trim control. A Dual-Function Control Box is included with purchase. Combining the integrated load controller and control box into a single unit conserves space and reduces wiring by half, making installation easier and faster.

The FlatWinder powered block fits monohulls 15 – 18 m (50 – 60’) and catamarans 14 – 15 m (45 – 50’). It can work alone or as part of the Easy Sailing System. It is available in 12 or 24V depending on the yacht’s electrical system.

*Switches and circuit breakers are not included.
