Two Maine boatyards well known beyond the Northeast will be combining their talents this spring. Hodgdon Yachts and Boothbay Region Boatyard have signed a letter of intent to merge under the Hodgdon umbrella, part of an ongoing effort to diversify the company that has made its name through five generations of family ownership.

Boothbay Region Boatyard, based in Southport, will continue to provide maintenance and repair service for boats ranging from small outboards to yachts up to 80 feet. The merger also includes Wotton's Wharf in Boothbay Harbor, owned by BRB, which offers deepwater dockage for yachts up to 200 feet. Wotton's is the home of the annual Shipyard Cup, a superyacht regatta.

Hodgdon has grown from its roots as a custom yacht builder to construction involving advanced composites and projects for the Department of Defense. The merger with BRB — known for its expertise in fiberglass, ship carpentry, finish and electrical and mechanical work — will provide Hodgdon with a new service division and new hubs of operation.

"Combining Boothbay Region Boatyard's outstanding facilities … with our facilities in East Boothbay, Richmond and Damariscotta will create one of Maine's largest full-service marine companies," said Timothy Hodgdon, president of Hodgdon Yachts. "We look forward to continuing to serve Boothbay Region Boatyard's existing customers while aggressively pursuing opportunities to grow the combined business."
