Forgotten and on hard times after lying idle and exposed for five years, Nigel Calder’s Nada is getting a new lease on life and a new mission: Helping the next generation of voyagers develop leadership skills through sailing.

The group Sailing Nada has spent the past three years restoring the Ingrid 38, which was found languishing in the back of a boatyard in 2009. Calder, the noted marine engineer and author, launched the boat in 1982 and sold it in 2004.

Before Nada sails again, though, the restoration team needs a financial lift to help it clear its last hurdle.

“Most of the work needed has been completed using ‘elbow grease’ and we are almost done with that,” Sailing Nada states on the fundraising website StartSomeGood.com. “She has been professionally surveyed and deemed sound and safe to launch. We now need to install modern safety equipment and electronics before taking passengers out on oceangoing adventures.”
