In addition to the destruction wreaked by Hurricane Sandy on shore in New Jersey and New York, the storm also took its toll on some aids to navigation. The light tower and day mark at the end of a jetty near Barnegat Lighthouse State Park in Barnegat Light, N.J., was knocked down by the storm. On Wednesday, December 5, a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and aircrew from USCG Air Station, Elizabeth City, N.C., airlifted the new tower into place where it was installed by Aids to Navigation Team Cape May.
