Grandmother kayaks from Maine to Guatemala

5 Sp1

Maine grandmother and retired scientist Dr. Deb Walters has embarked on a 2,500-nautical-mile solo kayak expedition to tell the story and raise awareness of the children living in the Guatemala City garbage dump.

Through a daily blog and other social media, she hopes to raise funds for Safe Passage, an organization started by Bowdoin College graduate Hanley Denning, who worked in Guatemala on behalf of at-risk children living in squalor.

Dr. Walters departed Maine in July 2014 and plans to paddle coastwise to Florida before traveling across the Gulf of Mexico by sail. She will then continue her kayak voyage for the final stretch from Belize to the mouth of Rio Dulce in Guatemala.
