Panama Canal rates expected to rise
New locks will allow for wider ships than original locks

The Panama Canal Authority has approved a proposal to raise the toll rates on the Panama Canal. This proposal will raise rates for commercial vessels and small vessels as well. According to an article by Don Winner of the Panama-Guide website, the toll increase is projected to be "...from 60% to 113% for small vessels passing through the Panama Canal as of 1 July 2012." The canal is currently undergoing an expansion program that is scheduled for completion in 2014.
