Young circumnavigator sets off satellite alarms

According to a report from ABC News, the 13-year-old Califonia sailor Abby Sunderland,  attempting to break the record for youngest around the world, has set off two of her 406 MHz EPIRBs in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar. The EPIRB set to transmit if immersed has reportedly not been triggered.

Jeff Casher, a member of Sunderland’s shore support team, reported he talked with Sunderland overnight and she was 20-25 foot waves and 35-knot winds when last contacted. During that time she was knocked down twice. During one of those knockdowns, her radar antenna was torn from the mast of her boat Wild Eyes, an Open 40.
