The Pentagon and the Department of Transportation have sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission concerning possible interference issues with LightSquared’s proposed wireless communication system that will operate on frequencies very close to those used by the GPS navigational system, according to a report published in the Wall Street Journal.
The article quoted the Defense and Transportation departments as writing that they “strongly advise that a comprehensive study of all the potential interference to GPS is needed. The new LightSquared business plan and the new FCC rules significantly expand the terrestrial transmission environment, increasing the potential for interference to GPS receivers.”
The article reports that LightSquared has already begun signing up customers for its service providing broadband wireless service. However, the FCC says that the company will not be able to proceed with its rollout until concerns about interference are researched and addressed.
