Whale trashes sailboat off Cape Town

Ralph Mothes and Paloma Werner were enjoying a pleasant sail off Cape Town in South Africa when a Souhern Right Whale launched itself out of the water right next to their boat. This was an exciting sight, for a few seconds anyway. Until the whale, estmated to have been 33 feet long, landed on their sloop and dismasted them.

Not only was the couple surprised by the whale’s sudden decision to come aboard, they were equally shocked to discover that the estimated damage was in the vicinity of $13,000. According to a BBC report, Werner doesn’t hold a grudge. “I still like whales,” she told a BBC reporter.
