Coast Guard corrects report of boat dismasted in Newport/Bermuda Race

John Rousmaniere, noted marine author and media contact for the 2010 Newport Bermuda Race, reports that the Coast Guard has corrected a report of a dismasted boat during the recent running of the race. Rousmaniere notes that none of the race boats were dismasted.

From the press release: U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue has corrected a posting on its online rescue report, On Scene, that identified a boat that was dismasted and abandoned in the Atlantic on June 15 as a participant in the Newport Bermuda Race. The correction, issued on July 8, reads as follows:

“The Newport Bermuda Race 2010 commenced on June 18, 2010 and On Scene is happy to report that all race participants successfully completed the race without incident. The On Scene Weekly SARSAT Rescue Report dated Wednesday June 23, 2010 incorrectly stated that the sailing vessel associated with the June 15th SARSAT Rescue was participating in the Newport Bermuda Race 2010 when high winds caused the vessel to lose its mast. Many thanks to the On Scene subscribers who pointed out this inaccuracy.”
