Edson builds beastly quadrant

Edson1

Edson International of New Bedford, Mass., has completed a quadrant to control yacht builder Royal Huisman’s latest project No. 398 — otherwise known as “The Beast” — the Dutch yard’s new 190-foot performance yacht.

The massive quadrant for the mechanical steering is designed to deliver precise control at the helm without any delay or sloppiness in the steering system.

The custom Edson steering system for project No. 398 features a quadrant with a record wire size groove of 12.7 mm (1/2 inch) and a bore measuring 710 mm (28 inches), making it three times larger than any quadrant that Edson has ever manufactured in the company’s 156-year history. The 1,000-mm (39.4-inch) radius quadrant is fabricated from lightweight marine-grade aluminum.
