Volvo Ocean Race ends in Kiel

John Kostecki's illbruck Challenge crossed the finish line in Kiel at 1617 GMT on Sunday June 9, 2002, to become the overall winner of the Volvo Ocean Race with a total of 61 points. Victory in the final 250-mile leg of the nine-leg race went to Knut Frostad's djuice, which finished sixth overall.

The last leg of the harrowing nine-month global ocean race started in Goteborg, Sweden, and finished approximately 24 hours later in the German port city of Kiel.

Final results are:

1 — illbruck Challenge, 61 pts

2 — Assa Abloy, 55 pts

3 — Amer Sports One, 44 pts

4 — Team Tyco, 42 pts

5 — Team News Corp, 41 pts

6 — djuice, 33 pts

7 — Team SEB, 32 pts

8 — Amer Sports Too, 16 pts

Following the success for the 2001-2002 race, organizers announced that a second Volvo Ocean Race is planned with yachts departing Europe in the fall of 2005.
