One hundred years ago this month, a lone mariner sailedinto Newport, R.I., shortly after midnight and threw over an anchor from the bows of his little yawl. A voyage of three years, two monthsthe first-ever solo circumnavigationhad come to a close.

To celebrate the occasion and honor the man, Joshua Slocum enthusiasts will gather in Rhode Island and Massachusetts for a series of festivities in June and July. The Joshua Slocum Society International will host a parade of sail, lectures, and a clambake in commemoration, and the Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol will offer a Slocum and Spray exhibit.

Slocum’s Sailing Alone Around the World, originally published as a series of articles in newspapers and magazines around the country, is still in print (Sheridan House, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) and includes original black-and-white drawings of Slocum and Spray.
