Slave ship launched at Mystic Seaport

A replica of the slave ship Amistad was launched at Mystic Seaport in March. The 129-foot (LOA) wooden schooner, which will fly 5,200-square feet of canvas on its two masts and topmasts, will serve as an ambassador ship to Amistad America, Inc., a non-profit group based in New Haven dedicated to promoting an understanding of history and racial harmony. Amistad will sail throughout the world, starting this summer with attendance in several traditional ship gatherings, including OpSail events in Connecticut and New York.

Amistad’s captain, William Pinkney, was the first African-American to sail solo around the world, a voyage via Cape Horn he completed in 1990.
