Racer lost at sea

A crewmember was lost overboard during the Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race in January. The 54-foot ketch Dove was seven miles east of Key Largo around midnight on January 15 when the man, who was not wearing a PFD, was knocked into the water after being hit by the vessel’s swinging boom.

The man was never found despite an extensive search by Dove’s crew and the Coast Guard. Weather conditions included poor visibility, 20-knot winds, and eight-foot seas. A squall with winds up to 45 knots was suspected to be a factor, according to reports.
