Paper chart changes to aid GPS use

In an effort to make paper charts easier to use in conjunction with GPS receivers, National Ocean Service charts will feature several changes in format. Upcoming charts will include latitude and longitude tick marks along all horizontal and vertical lines, instead of exclusively along the chart edges.

It will consequently be easier to take a lat/long position from the GPS and plot it on the chart, since the marks eliminate the need to maneuver parallel rules or triangles from the margins to the position.

Another change will be the addition of lat/long positions of entrance channel buoys. The published positions will be in a box next to the buoy it describes.
