New globe-girdling powerboat record

Jan 1, 2003

The world record for the fastest circumnavigation in a powerboatwas broken in early July by the high-tech British trimaran Cable & Wireless Adventurer.

The 114-foot vessel, which resembles a needle-like space ship, returned to Gibraltar on July 3 after spending 74 days, 20 hours, 58 minutes at sea. The previous record of a little more than 83 days was set by the nuclear submarine U.S.S. Triton in 1960.

The accomplishment will reportedly be entered into the Guinness Book of World Records. The vessel will soon be on display in Lisbon at Expo '98 after which it will return to Southampton, England, where it was built.
