Veteran racers Rich Wilson and Bill Biewenga have successfully navigated the trimaran Great American II to victory, shattering the 146-year-old record set by the clipper ship Mandarin rushing prospectors to the Australian gold rush. The new record for the more than 15,000 nm, 68 days, 10 hours, seven minutes, 52 seconds, was faster by a mere 26 hours, apparently as a result of some light winds the pair experienced just out from New York and while approaching Australia. The pair had hoped to break the record by as much as nine days.
Wilson and Biewenga are not strangers to each other's company, having raced around the Horn to break the record from San Francisco to Boston against the time of the clipper ship Northern Light.
