Hess to visit his own rendezvous

Noted yacht designer Lyle Hess will be attending a rendez-vous of his creations this summer in Long Beach, Calif. The 87-year-old is well known for his sturdy designs of small deep-draft sailing yachts, including several Bristol Channel pilot cutters and the vessels that intrepid voyagers Lin and Larry Pardey built and lived aboard, Taleisin and Seraffyn.

Event organizer Roger Olson is reserving 100 slips at Long Beach Marina for Hess devotees. "Lyle is now 87 and we know that this will be our last attempt to have a tribute to him where he can be present," said Olson, who can be contacted for more information on the July 16/17 event: 949-645-1843 or roger.olson@worldnet.att.net. Cost for dockage will be 50 cents per foot (of deck length, of course, out of respect for those long Hess bowsprits).
